70s

Where are they now?
That 70’s Show
Lynrenée Riley 12/1/10
Most people remember That 70’s Show as a bunch of carefree teenagers who were the trouble makers of the town but always had a good time. These characters were Eric Forman played by Topher Grace, Donna Pinciotti, played by Laura Prepon, Jackie Burkhart played by Mila Kunis, Steven Hyde played by Danny Masterson. Also, there was Michael Kelso played by Ashton Kutcher Fez played by Wilmer Valderrama, Kitty Forman played by Debra Jo Rup, Red Forman played by Kurtwood Smith and Bob Pinciotti played by Don Stark. When you think of this show, you probably think of the most memorable times, the circles they had when they talked about nothing, Donna and Eric being the perfect couple, Kelso always cheating on Jackie, Fez never having a girlfriend, Red always yelling at Eric and Hyde never caring about anything. However, did you ever think where these stars are today? Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher would turn out to be the most active actors/actresses, but the other cast members definitely did not stop acting. One of the stunning actresses that moved on after That 70’s Show into great success was Mila Kunis, who performed in movies and shows as a guest star such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Date Night, Black Swan and more. Another actor on the show, Ashton Kutcher went on to big time roles and commercials after That’s 70’s Show ended. He stared in tons of movies such as What Happens in Vegas, Killers, Valentines Day, No Strings Attached and much more.

Quake

Quake ON Long Island
It’s not often we hear about earthquakes on long island. Long Island had an earthquake on Tuesday and some of us from Nassau to Suffolk counties felt the earth move beneath our feet.
A quake 150 miles off the eastern shore hit Long Island. It weighed in as a 3.9 magnitude, and its shocks were felt from New York to Massachusetts. While the earthquake was off the Long Island coast, its tremors were felt in western Nassau County and in the East End. Not much damage has been reported.
The epicenter was 79 miles south-southeast of Southampton at a depth of more than 4 miles below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean and registered 3.9 on the Richter scale at 10:45 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Although most of the severe effects of the quake were felt out east especially the Hamptons, other complaints came in from residents who said they felt like a big truck was driving by.
The earthquake wasn’t big enough to do any damage or hurt anyone, and the US Coast Guard said there is no threat of a tsunami, which could have caused huge disasters. Its 3.9 magnitude was the biggest earthquake in our area in 18 years. According to the USGS which monitors earthquakes across the country, an earthquake of up to a magnitude of 4.0 "infrequently causes damage near its source." This is not the first time Long Island had an earthquake this year, in June a Canadian earthquake was felt in parts of Long Island as well. Hopefully, this will be last one for a while.

Trouble in Miami

Trouble in Miami

The summer of Lebron. The out of control free agent frenzy. Teams Fighting back and forth to see who will take home the king. After offers from the Knicks and bulls Lebron ended up with the Miami Heat, along with Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh. A super team. A tem expected to win more than 70 games and take over the NBA for the next 5-10 years. But with all the hype the team has not lived up to expectations to say the least. The team usually sits at 10-8 with aspirations of winning a championship the team needs to find the problem and fast
Lebron, Wade, and Bosh arguably the best players at their positions, if not in the league. Expectations have been very high this year for the Miami Heat. With predictions of having a 70 win season it doesn’t look like that will happen. The Heat are currently sitting at a mediocre 10-8 and third place in the division and in their last 10 games there record is 5-5. Coach Erik Spoelstra is on the hot seat in Miami, so much so that players are questioning his ability to control the team, the team feels like Spoelstra is not allowing them to be themselves, ESPN’s Jalen Rose reports. He has told Lebron James numerous times that he has to be more serious when that’s just his personality and has been for the last 7 years. Lebron as well as Wade and Bosh are too complaining about there coach. Apparently the offense is too pedestrian; to be honest it doesn’t even look like an offense it looks like a pickup game in the park. It does not look like Spoelstra is the right coach for this job; tension is definitely growing between him and his players.
The big three have not been that big at all this year when the team needs them to take control in a tight game they really haven’t stepped up they are 0-2 against the Celtics, the only team that I have really seen so far other than the magic that can really contend to beat the Lakers and are 1-1 against the magic with an embarrassing second loss of 105-94 the heat are not working together as a team. Team chemistry is obviously lacking it almost looks like every time down the floor the Heat take turns on who is going to go 1 on 1 and that can’t be the way you win championships. These players don’t seem to be consistent as they used to and neither one of them are putting up big numbers, but how. These are the 3 best players in the league. Lebron who is usually who usually leads the league in PPG, is currently sitting in 10th and wade at 17th how could two of the most explosive players in the NBA not be doing better as well as being on a 10-8 team. “ It seems like the presence of each other takes away from their own swagger” says ESPN’s Michael Smith “ Lebron and Wade are both players who need the ball in there hands in order to make an offense work, but the ball can’t be in 2 sets of hands at once”
The next challenge for Miami could be a very easy or a difficult one if they make it. It is lebron’s homecoming against the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the fans are going to be brutal as well as the players. Ever since the 1 hour special “The decision” no cleavland player has talked to Lebron or even mentioned his name. Fans tour down signs of him billboards of him anything that reminded them of him was gone. The Cavs currently are sitting at 7-10 and could easily be better. Miami is going to have to pick up there energy level and start playing as a team to beat Cleveland, as well as lebron’s promised 5 championships.
All teams have to bust out some cinks as the season goes on it’s expected but nobody expected a mediocre season for the Heat. As early as the Cleveland game is it is easy to say that this game could make or break the season. With a win the heat could get back on track and start becoming what people expected them to be, Champions.

Rap Slap- Nicki vs. Lil Kim

The quarrel between Nicki Minaj and Lil Kim’s raps always seemed to amuse the fans and paparazzi, especially once Nicki Minaj began getting popular. Recently, both girls’ true cat claws were shown. Nicki came out with her new album Pink Friday on November 19, 2010, in which Lil Kim took offensively as if Nicki meant some song lyrics as a ‘slap in the face’… “Look at my show footage, how these girls be spazzin. So f*** I look like gettin' back to a has-been? Yeah, I said it, has-been, Hang it up, flat screen. Haha plasma." With this in mind, Lil Kim barked back, this time… leaving it for the paparazzi to eat up. “It'll be a murder scene, I'm turning 'Pink Friday' to 'Friday the 13th,” says Lil Kim in one of her newer songs, called Black Friday, in which she purposely copied from Nickis new album, Pink Friday.

Drake decides to have a little fun with the girls as well. Siding with Minaj, Drake writes some lyrics as well. "Yeah, this hood sh** you and Drake ain't built for, this the s*** the other b**** almost got killed for." Yet, the girls see each other, talk and tell each other everything’s fine. “Yeah, everything’s good, we good,” Lil Kim once told Nicki at Lil Wayne’s concert, even after being two-teamed by Drake and Minaj.

Even so, Lil Kim still continues to harass her competitor, making sure she really digs it in… “That's cool, I was the first one wit' it / You'se a Lil Kim wannabe you just hate to admit it.” Nicki Minaj, keeping it a little classier on the other hand, explains to the press how Lil Kim isn’t bothered by the fact that Nicki is more successful, yet the fact that she’s insecure about herself, her career, and her fan population. Minaj explains how she thought she was helping Lil Kim out by making her popular, again. "Why in the black community we gotta hate on each other instead of saying, Thank you for showing me love, thank you for keeping my name alive?" She was giving her interviews’, paparazzi were interested, people were reading and curious, yet Lil Kim still took it as a ‘slap in the face’.

New study halls

Study Hall has moved from Cafeterias to classrooms in a way of boosting grades. Rules have been placed that make it more like a detention room than a study hall.

Is this the right thing to do? Does it take away the fun of study hall or, does it give you something better back like less work to do at home? Many students have problems with this.
Is it fair that one of your strictest classes is one that you don’t get graded in? Many wonder what caused this change the old system seemed like it was working well.

“It’s totally unfair to do especially, when you have no work to do. Sitting there for 40 minutes is horrible.” Tom Ciocio states.

Kids wonder how come we can’t listen to iPods and not even whisper to friends. Kenny Edwards argues that the new study hall isn’t helping “Not only was the cafeteria better it gave us a choice on what we wanted to do I personally work better at home than in a classrooms.”
Although Study Hall has study in the title not many kids study in it. It’s more of an extra lunch where occasionally a book gets opened. “Many students have a hard time focusing in the loud cafeteria in big groups”. Says Alyssa Brener.

Changes in Cookie Intake

Why the sudden change in the distribution of goods in Smithtown schools? Cookies should be a treat, not a privilege. In the school store, a bag of cookies is not considered very much to kids our age, due to the fact that we’re growing boys and girls. If cookies are as fattening as the Health Wellness Community says they are, then why are we even able to buy one bag? If we are limited to only one bag of cookies per day, there’s no point of selling the cookies. Mr. Coady, principal of Smithtown West, explains that “It’s your decision, and I decided to treat you like adults.” Asking Mr. Coady helped our curiosity a bit, especially since he was flexible with making new rules.
“No I do not want kids eating two to three bags of cookies, but one bag AFTER your lunch is a good treat.” Mr. Coady decided that in order to let kids have their privilege of limiting their own cookie intakes, then you are able to get more than one bag the last fifteen minutes of each lunch period. Also, he feels it is important for the kids to know how much they’re inhaling. With this in mind, a billboard will be put up above the school store in the commons, including the amount of calories and fat in each food item sold.
